Baby macaw care:
Feeding and caring for your new baby macaw
One of the most important things if you are getting a baby macaw from me is do
"NOT TO CHANGE HIS/HER DIET". Even though the baby has eaten on its own in
most cases for up to two weeks it is important that you maintain the baby on the same
pellets and seed mix I have told you they are on for at least another month. Then
after that if you wish to change the diet do so but slowly.
Your baby also needs to spend 3 to 4 hours a day during the day in his/her cage.
The baby is going through a transition going to a new home with a new cage, toys
ect. and must settle down and have the 3 to 4 hours a day to eat. The baby can't eat
if its not in the cage. After a few weeks have gone by more time can be spent out of
the cage. My macaw has his door open or is on his stand all day he learned to climb
in and out of his cage to eat when ever he wanted but this will take your baby awhile
to learn. Also if I have something I share with my macaw.
When my babies leave they are on pellets, macaw specific seed mix and fresh foods.
The seed is VOLKMAN AVSS MACAW and can be purchased here WINGIN' IT
The pellets can be purchased at MAZURI COMPANY or if you have a livestock feed
store in your area and they sell Parina feeds they can get the Mazuri pellets in for
you. I do not feed a sunflower based diet "EVER"! I also feed the babies Sam's
Choice Tropical Trail Mix every day. I get the tropical mix from Wall-Mart. It has the
large shelled nuts and dried fruits. Make sure your baby is getting this they need the
fat from the large nuts at this time and cannot shell the large nuts yet.
The cages I wean my babies in has a floor not the open grate for the waste to drop
through so you will need to cover the floor with card board and then cover that with
paper I use news papers. Your baby may still be sleeping on the floor and not
perching at night. Change the paper everyday! Its a mess they love to play with their
food and make a mess. You can take the cardboard and paper away in about a
month.
If you have bought a baby macaw from me PLEASE if I have not covered something
that you might think about ASK ME I am here for support before and after you buy
your baby.
So that you know after your macaw baby settles in he/she will be very noisy its up to
you to teach him/her what is acceptable. Some screaming is expected.........its a
macaw....but there is such a thing as to much.....believe me I know. Having several
baby macaws in the house sometimes can be trying. After about a month of your
baby settling in if your baby starts screaming and its an issue remove him/her from
the room when the baby becomes quite reward him/her by going and getting them
and bring them back out if it happens again remove him again. Be consistent they are
like small children.
